Restorative Practice in our school :

The staff and children in St. Colmcille’s JNS are working hard at building a restorative culture within our school. We are committed to the use of Restorative Practice, which is all about building relationships through connection and positive communication. As part of our SPHE education, the children engage in a student curriculum programme, teaching them about the values of friendship, kindness and understanding, as well as the importance of taking accountability for our actions/behaviour and being part of the solution when conflict arises. We also celebrate “Lá Ghrá” in February each year. This is a very enjoyable day that gives the staff and children the chance to spend time connecting with each other.

Here are the restorative questions we can use with the children when conflict arises:

  1. What happened?
  2. What were you thinking/ feeling at the time?
  3. What are you thinking/ feeling now?
  4. Who is sad/ hurt now and in what way?
  5. What could have been done differently?
  6. How can we fix this/ make amends?

If you are interested in learning more about how to use the Restorative principles in your home, we invite to engage with this 10 part learning module (10 x 5 minute approx. videos) for parents/guardians. Use the QR code below to access the content.
